Geothermal vents are a hotbed for life on the ocean floor. Configurations for life that are otherwise inconceivable arise over and over. Even here,in this far off place, there is wealth to be had,and as with all imperishable wealth, it is golden.
How Much is in the Ocean?
Heavy metals make up a frighteningly small percentage of seawater. Most data collected thus far suggests that seawater is so dilute that gold may make up as little as 13 parts per billion in any given liter of sea water. While there’s still enough in the ocean for every human in the world to get pounds of it, the amount of effort to extract it is prohibitive. Geothermal vents are a different story altogether.
A Story Forty Years in the Making
Since the 1970s, people have been trying to figure out how to get at those meaty deposits on the ocean floor. There are two main methods by which miners could extract precious metals from sea floor vents and their environs. The first is essentially filtering the sea water near the vents. The main challenge for that is making something with a fine enough grain filter to get at microscopic amounts of gold. This isn’t, by itself, a difficult task.
The other method for sea bed metal extraction involved actual mining. Much of the metal from geothermal vents deposits out, as it is heavier than the water around it. As the water rises in its column, the heavy metals fall lower and lower through the water until the current emanating from the vent isn’t enough to hold them up. This leads to the creation of massive sulfide deposits on the sea floor.
Here, concentrations are significantly higher, alongside other heavy metals. Today, some firms, such as Nautilus, have developed mining drones to take on this challenge. Getting mining equipment to the ocean floor, and preserving the species native to that area is important, but extracting those deposits would be a rush the likes of which has never been seen before.
